In response to a late assignment

http://www.aiga.org/content.cfm/what-is-design?searchtext=What%20is%20graphic%20design%3F

I think everyone should read that little piece. It really sums up what graphic design is. Almost everything we use or see on a daily basis has, in some way, been affected by some sort of design technique. The website I'm writing this on, my keyboard layout and the typeface used on it, the logo on my laptop, etc, have all be touched and tweaked by designers.

There really are many disciplines that need to be understood to develop proficiency as a designer. In today's world a designer can't just be a pen and paper designer. Software is taking over many of the realms of design, which means that designers now have to become proficient in multiple forms of design. Software, hand-crafting, auditory, etc, all forms of design or conveying design must be mastered to succeed.

so here we have an animated .gif file. its a knife being thrown into an apple...about 1.5 seconds total. after making contact a worm pops up and says bullseye. just for fun, maybe use it for something later.

this is a new version of the wrinkle ad. moved the text in off the edge and also added a bleed to it. also moved the url under the logo.

finally this picture is done. this was a poster project from earlier in the semester. basically i didnt realize that my picture was a. in cmyk, and b. was completely corrupted so each time i tried uploading it, nothing appeared. well now it is.

the topic i chose was world racism. i basically took a facial shot and cut it up and mashed together several different skin tones to create a new person and then used various languages, with the highlighted language being english, to dictate the message. the face has a very bland emotion on it, which definitely helps because the poster is meant to have anything other than a positive emotion. the text says "on the outside we are all different. but on the inside we are all the same."

this module was an advertisement. finally, working with some high resolution images. i also love sharpeis so that was a bonus. the company that this was done for was called Vivesse. its a plastic surgery place, i guess. The ad uses the sharpei with the main catch line "have a few wrinkles?" I had to cut out the dog and then i also found a new background that i thought was better because red velvet symbolizes beauty. or at least it looks cleaner to me. So i brought it into indesign and worked on it from there, added some kearning to some of the text, very slight, just to make it fit. did enough to make it work and not make it look so bunched. otherwise, thats about it. typeface is a custom face i found called swissmbt.

Three logos. All the same company. This module involved being contracted to make logos for a television company. Television as in this company only exists in a tv show. Mine was Duff Beer from The Simpsons. The only tweaks on this process was the facts behind the company. The main focuses I worked with were the Boston origin and the Stout Ale, which is a dark brew with a complex taste. So with the typeface I wanted to use an older style face. The face was actually called Birra Stout. A match made in heaven. The cloverleaf is because the origin is Irish

the text sizes on both may be a little larger than normal but that was to compensate for using an 8.5 x 11 page size vs a normal book size, which is probably a 6 x4 or something like that. for layout 1 i used a 12 point grid and centered everything before the text. i believe the faces used are tw cen mt regular for the headings and title. the body is franklin gothic book regular. and the first word is bolded.

layout 2 is a bit more abstract, i kinda liked the idea of going to side to side. so the chapter is on the right and the title and author on the left. the text is centered, didnt see why i would need to change that. there is a 15 point grid. and the faces are ms sans serif regular for the titles and header. and i again used franklin gothic book regular for the text. this also features a text wrap around a leaf.

both feature a drop cap "l" although if i was to redo these i would probably not do it on the second, or at least do it so large on the second.

aiga logo model. idea behind it is "thinking going on". the idea behind the brain being there is that you're plugging into knowledge. or something like that, havent developed how to fully express what the plug and brain means. at least it looks cool.

just added the image in background. also want to talk about pose...pose is a "thinker" type of pose. again, because im always thinking.
okay, so the next project. not as glamorous or maybe as easy too look at as the others, or at least thats my way of seeing it. still learning some skills and im gonna brush up on some.

this was a self-portrait project but not of drawing yourself...by "collaging" yourself. the hat is self explanatory, i like to keep things under lock and key. the face is fish and water because those are probably 2 of my most favorite activities and hobbies. the mouth is shrimp...i love shrimp. the eyes and neck are lacrosse related. being as it is my favorite and best sport i made it the neck, symbolizing that it can turn the head to do whatever it wants to do that is lacrosse related. the eyes are lacrosse heads because i seem to spend endless hours studying and watching the game.

the body is wood and construction because its another hobby. it also represents my technical abilities and how i always look at things in an almost mechanical manner.

lastly the arm is simple...computers and gaming, what else do i need to say. oh, and the hair, thats a circuit board.

one more update. upped saturation on images 1 and 5 to really contrast the orange and blue.

revisited the 1st image, hope i got it all. now syracuse stands out instead of duke player just empty non existent

Thursday, September 24, 2009

this is an attempted progression piece of duke and syracuse in 2009. i called it "the dive." it used several filters and adjustments to make each of the 5 images unique. i used selection and erasing in the first and last. then there is a posterize on the 2nd. an invert on the 3rd and a neon glow + poster edges for the 4th.
made a few changes to it. used a liquify to make the twist in the middle of the top one. i like it much better because it really gives that morph feel without letting it get too twisted.

with this one i applied a poster edges filter and i really like how it came out. you really see the differences between the layers.

shifted and changed font. very simple changes, i like it a lot. added image on right.

inserted the sword image. shifted the text. i really like this. i think i may revisit this and try to mess around with strokes and colors. the black and white is cool but i think there are some better options.

this was the second project. very similar because i used a different old english font and i just changed the capitals in the beginning.

this was the first project that i did last week. i took a piece of the epic "Beowulf" and used some old english and celtic text to enhance it. i liked using the old school celtic box letters for the first letters.
